While upgrading from XP Home to XP Pro I was prompted to locate hkdrv.sys
and because XP was unable to locate it I am now in the dreaded "blue
screen". XP Pro obviously did not install properly and I am looking to
solve the problem. I have a Toshiba Sattelite A35-159, 512, RAM, P2. The
only warnign I received before installation was that the driver for DVD
RAM was in a conflict with the installation but proceeded thinking I could
probably update that after installation. Any ideas to either recover my
old system or finish with XP? I tried booting from the disc but Toshiba
only provides a restoration disc.
Unfortunatly there are at least two issues with the above, I have already
encountered from having followed proticol as I suspected this proceedure.
One I can't seem to get a command prompt in any mode never mind safe mode,
as I can get into "safe mode" but without any workable screen ( DOS
prompt). Secondly Two I can't do a restore "last known good config" tried
that seems that it was in the midst of Windows components installation
when this "locate hkdrv.sys" request came up, which may be maleware? As
there seems to be no such file except as maleware (search Google results
=7). I cannot remove the DVD ROM from the Laptop and Toshiba does not
recognize the "hkdrv.sys" file either seems to have little to do with the
actual drive. I would like to know the identity of the "hkdrv.sys" file so
I can know how to approach it's action, removal or ignore once again.
Lastly, once I do all the above to sucessfull outcome and, all failing,
is there a program that will recover some of my lost files once I have
re-imaged my HD?

I am trying to do the same to my Satellite A70, and I am having trouble as
well. Using the Windows-based installation feature, I get:

"Before Setup continues, please restart your computer."

Trying to boot straight from the XP CD, I get an error which specifies a
particular file, but I cannot remember what the file is or what the error
said.

I am also having problems with the DVD-RAM driver. An MVP suggested that I
uninstall the driver and try the installation again. The problem with this is
that it also uninstalls the CD driver, and hence I cannot access the CD.

I have read that perhaps Toshiba might provide a customised upgrade disk or
something? I mean, they sell some of their machines with Pro pre-loaded, so
it is obviously possible. That claim is backed up by the salesman trying to
make me pay $300 for him to install it for me.

I will be looking into the idea of a customised disc later today, and if
successful I will let you know. Good luck with yours.

Has anyone out there every found a solution to this problem, or is this forum just another dead end?
