I bought a sony viao with vista premium. Installed upgrade to v. ultimate.
suddednly no wireless connection. Spoke with sony and found that sony does
not recommend v. ultimate. with much struggle, I managed to get back to
factory settings and v. premium. How can MS promote this upgrade without
proper warnings?

What makes you think it was MS's problem. Sony (and all OEM's) modifies the OS to fit their
hardware and sound more like Sony has screwed the match.

More to the point, why do Sony not warn of it?

Sorry to hear about that. I bought an Acer with Vista HP pre-installed. Of
course, it was loaded with all manner of Acer (and other 3rd party)
software, meddling with the works every which way .. so I downloaded and
burned to disc the device drivers appropriate to the Acer laptop .. and
wiped the drive and installed a generic copy of Vista U. It works very well
now.

If your wireless connection was the only problem, why didn't you use some of
the diagnostic tools built in to try to resolve it. Also, if you bought a
retail upgrade you should have Microsoft support for upgrade problems.
Drivers should be the same regardless of Vista version.

Without the specifics, i.e., the NIC type/model, no one can address that
issue. Where'd you get the Vista Ultimate upgrade disc? What did you do to
try and address the problem? Did you go to the Sony web site and download
their NIC driver? Did you go to the NIC mfg's web site and try a driver from
there? How did you get back to factory settings and VHP?

Just curious...

How is Microsoft to know who purchases substandard hardware?
