upgrade to Media Edtion Can I save my programs to reinstall?

I am thinking about upgrading to ME but I have a number of programs that I
downloaded via the web. Can I save these in a backup on another hard drive or
just copy them to the other hard drive and reinstall after loading the OS?
 
You need to reinstall the programs using the original installer, they will
not likely work by just copying the folders back and forth.
