Upgrade Question

I am ready to upgrade from 98SE to XP. I have been told
that I should start from scratch by allowing XP to wipe
out all of my disk and install new.

I was going to do the usual "upgrade" in order to keep
several of my setups and programs in place in order not to
re-install all over again.

Here's the question:
1. Is it really better to wipe out and start from scratch?
2. Is there a possible problem in just doing the "upgrade"?

I know it's a hassle, but wipe it out and do a clean
install.

To prepare:

Update your bios
Find all the latest drivers for your hardware and
programs.

You may also want to:

Check for program and hardware compatibility prior to
installing.

The possible problems with the upgrade are
incompatibility issues with hardware and older programs
and leaving a lot of junk on your drive you don't need.

Hi,

Well that depends on several factors. in either case you
should check if your computer is compatible for Win xp.
you can do that by running the utility available in xp cd
and that appears when you insert ur xp cd.

If you have the set up files of the programs that are
availale then i recommend to go for a fresh installation
since it gives better performance. Even an upgrade will
do but the files of 98 will be lurking somewhere for
backward compatibility.

A clean install is always the best solution when going from 98 to a NT
kernel OS.
If your 98 has any corrupted files or is running poorly this will transfer
over.

Before anything do the compatibly test first to see if anything on your
machine is in need of repair.

1. Is it really better to wipe out and start from scratch?

Yes.. if you do backup all important files ie. OE mailbox, histoy, docs,
txt, and so on.

Check your device manager and log every piece of hardware you have then
download the latest
XP drivers and patches.
2. Is there a possible problem in just doing the "upgrade"?

Yes but not preferable IMO

Try the upgrade and if it is successful then you've saved yourself a lot of
time and hassle. If it is not successful then you've lost a couple of hours
of your time. See Gary Woodruff's site for info on upgrading
http://www.aumha.org/a/xpupgrad.htm

Personally I've found that upgrades can be very successful providing you
ensure that you backup important data first, you ensure you have XP drivers
for your NIC and/or modem so you can get on line after, that you do a proper
disk cleanup including running the Upgrade Advisory to ensure your software
and hardware meet the challenge, that you uninstall what can't meet the
challenge BEFORE you upgrade, dump your recycle bin, empty temp files and do
a defrag. That should enable a decent upgrade to happen.

Answered in another newsgroup. Please do not send the same
message separately to more than one newsgroup. Doing so just
fragments the thread, so someone who answers in one newsgroup
doesn't get to see answers from others in another newsgroup.

If you must send the same message to more than one newsgroup,
please do so by crossposting (but only to a *few* related
newsgroups).
