I'm using WinXP on a 1gb laptop and wondered whether a fairly ancient
533mhz 512mb Ram desktop could handle going from Win98SE to XP -
there are a few apps that will only run on XP that I'd like to use.
Any advice greatly appreciated

I personally have found that with the right amount of RAM (over 256MB)
Windows XP in classic mode or with a majority of the "bells and whistles"
turned off runs better than Windows 2000 on machines such as the one you
mentioned.

I run XP Pro on a Pentium II 300 mghz with 264 mb of RAM
and it runs fine. Go for it, just be aware that you may
have to update some drivers.

That should work adequately provided you are not aiming to run heavy
multimedia like DVD movies (where it will work at the same level as the
Win98). You need to have about 4GB hard disk space free too. Then Read
Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

Ok. Everyone told you to upgrade. The only drawback I can see is that
you'll probably have to upgrade some drivers (no biggie), and you'll
have to purchase a Windows XP upgrade for around $90 or $100 (unless
you already have an OEM version ??).
