Happy new year,

I upgraded my operative system from ME home edition to XP Pro.

I did of course not take backup of my files.

My files used to reside on c:\Windows\Profiles\...\MyDocuments

My new workspace is on c:\Documents and Settings\...\MyDocuments

I tried to copy my old files from my old profile into my new but I cannot
find the files.

The old tree structure is intact but there are no files.

Please help for recovery.

Kamil

Hi Kamil,

Usually, the old profiles are imported into the new system, have you check
for other user profiles under C:\Documents and Settings? Unfortunately, this
is not always so, especially with files and folders that were in the desktop
folder of the previous system. Sometimes data is lost during upgrades, which
is why backing up is so critical before doing an upgrade. If you cannot find
the data, then I would first suggest you uninstall the upgrade if you have
that option. The undo file may contain your data files and you can recover
it before redoing the upgrade. If you do not have that option, you may want
to try an undelete utility (there are many freeware ones available) to see
if any remnants of the files still remain on the hard drive, though much of
them may have been overwritten by the operating system upgrade.

Thanks Rick,

I am afraid you are right that many of my files are gone forever.

Did you try a search of the drive for one or two you recall the names of?

Hi,

To try and retrieve your deleted files, you would want to use an undelete
utility. These are commonly available for free, and work on the premise that
the space the file formerly occupied has not been overwritten with new data
yet. Once that has occured, recovery requires more extensive (and expensive)
work with dedicated forensic tools by someone who knows what they are doing.

This one here works quite well for basic file recovery:
