I need to upgrade my backup/fileserver/printserver from a 233 P1 motherboard
to a Tyan Dual 1G PIII mother board. I would like to keep the same
harddrives with the same existing filestructure and Server2003 software. Is
this possible? And if so, is there a KB or such article on the best
practices for moving a server to a new motherboard. Thanks for the help.
charlie.

Never a good idea. Windows relies on a concept known as HAL (Hardware
Abstraction Layer) to control how it interacts with the system it is running
on. This is created at installation and updated (slightly) as new bits of
hardware are installed or removed. Changing the CPU, Motherboard and all the
associated components that go along with it will cause Windows to, best
case, re-enumerate every device in the system and rebuild its HAL, or worst
case, not boot. I can pretty much guarantee that if you take your HD's from
your Pentium 233 and expect them to boot on a "new" P3 1000, it will fail.
Especially since you are going from 1 CPU to 2.

Save yourself the trouble and start fresh. A clean install of W2K is always
a good thing. Good luck. . .

Thanks for the reply, even if it took a while to get back to it. I did like
you suggested and built on a clean hard drive. charlie
