Thanks for the reply. The rule does not make sense when both OS are on the
same machine. MS does not lose any revenue and the only benefit the end
user
gets is to let the new OS stabilise before getting rid of the old one and
have a chance to replace any software that does not work.
Actually they do loose revenue - as you are getting to use a full Windows XP
and a full Windows Vista but you only paid for a part of the cost of Windows
Vista by buying an upgrade license. Think of it like part exchanging your
current car for a newer model. You don't get to keep the old car unless you
pay full price for the new one.
Can you please tell me whether it is possible to get a Vista Home Premium
upgrade and replace the XP Pro?
Yes you can buy the upgrade from Windows XP Pro to Home Premium
see

I am not interested in keeping the existing
set up, programs etc. I can manually do all that. I am not keen on
updrading to Vista business. Thanks for your help.
No problem as the upgrade from XP Pro to Home Premium is a clean install so
you will have to put back you apps and data yourself, but as you say that
is fine hen no problems
