As the result many problems I took my system back the XP home edition that
was originally installed. I then ran windows update and updated all the
critical updates except SP2. I also uninstalled the norton antivirus 2003
that came with my computer.

After a restart. I then upgraded to XP pro version 2002 which says it
includes SP 1 (upgrade not complete install). Every time I try install I get
a message to insert the "service pack 1 CD" during the windows installation.
This occurs if I ok the program to go on the internet (or not) at the
begining of the upgrade. I've always just cancelled through the messages and
completed the install as I don't have a SP 1 disc. I tried going to the
micorsoft download site but SP1 is not avail for download anymore so I can't
even create a disc if I wanted to. The install continues but hangs on the
screen for XP pro requiring a hard (ie turn off power-cntrl alt delete
doesn't work) shut down.

I'm then able to restart without any problem.

When I go to install windows update I get the 0x8007043B error message.

Help! This is driving me mad and has ruined a weekend with installing and
uninstalling systems.

Open a CMD.EXE window.

Type the following commands:

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

Close the command prompt.
