I have a Compaq Presario laptop X 1000,which was purchased in Canada, and I
have been using it Patiala,Punjab,India with excellent results for past one
year. It came preloaded with Windows XP Home edition, and Microsoft Works
version 7.
I now want to upgrade to Windows XP Professional, and also want to have
Microsoft Outlook XP on laptop. I do not want to install pirated versions of
these programs which are available in market.
Kindly let me know the procedure to go about it.

Visit a nearby store that sells computer software and purchase
a "Retail Upgrade Version" of Windows XP Professional and
also Microsoft Outlook 2003 or Microsoft Office 2003.

While running Windows XP Home Edition, insert the Windows
XP Professional Upgrade CD in the CD drive and select the default
"Upgrade" option during setup. After installing Windows XP Pro,
proceed to install either Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Office.

Why didn't you also direct him to an upgrade version of Office 2003? His MS
Works 7.0 is valid to upgrade to anything Office 2003 (except teacher and
Student Edition).

Just made this upgrade last week. Put in the xp pro disk and it will prompt
for upgrade. go through it and then I had to reinstall video drivers,
printer drivers, etc. After that, had trouble with ms office. reinstalled
it. and so on. alll is now working well.
