Buy Windows 2000
Buy a hard drive
Unplug IDE cable at motherboard end for current hard drive.
Install new hard drive and plug it into IDE0.
Install Windows 2000 on new hard drive (or a partition on it).
Plug original hard drive into IDE1 and use it as a second drive. All your
files will exist on that drive and you didn't have to live in fear that you
may lose your files or the ability to boot your computer if you accidentally
did a clean install or had an unsuccessful upgrade.

I want to upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 Pro, what are the steps
One of the first things is to verify compatibility with your existing
hardware and software. Review this article for details, specifically the
section titled, "Run the Upgrade Report". This report will list any known
software and hardware issues, whether you intent to perform an upgrade or
clean install of Windows 2000 Pro.
Best suggestion is to do a clean install of Win2k pro....Upgrading is a
hassle & MAY have lots of incompatibilities with current drivers &
softwares.
