Upgrade from Win98 (NOT SE) to XP Pro

On the Microsoft home page it says that I can upgrade from
Win98 (first one) to XP Professional But when I look at a
retail store such as Best Buy it says I need Full version
of Miscrosoft Windows. Will the OEM from this 5 year old
PC running Win98 take the upgrade or do I need the full
Ver?

The Windows XP Upgrade version will upgrade Windows 98 (first edition).
However you first concern is to must make certain that your hardware will
support the upgrade. Common issues include BIOS needing to be updated,
chipset and other hardware drivers like modems, scanners and sound cards may
also need new drivers that must be downloaded from the manufacturer. Before
upgrading make sure you run the Compatibility Wizard. While it is on the XP
CD you might want to download and run it before you purchase. It is free
from Microsoft but is a large download

Why would you upgrade a 5 year OLD computer to XP period????? This computer
will probably cause you nothing but grief if you do. You should be looking
at upgrading the computer before you install an operating system on a
computer that is just to old. Biggest problem with people expecting the
operating system is going to super charge an old system. Then they start
upgrading components try to get the upgrading system to work only to find
out that they have spent more money on an old system than a new system would
costs. Use you common sense and save ulcers.
