I'm trying to upgrade a machine with win2k to winxp but i keep getting an
error message stating "windows xp does not support upgrading from microsoft
windows 2000 professional to microsoft windows xp professional".

any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It appears you acquired an "OEM version" of Windows XP Pro.
That version can only be installed by reformatting the hard drive.
You'll need a "Retail Upgrade Version" of Windows XP Pro
in order to upgrade over an existing Windows 2000 installation.

A Full Retail version will also do an upgrade but of course it costs more.
