Upgrade from w98 to w2000

Tim

I am having issues upgrading the OS on an old PC:

I performed an upgrade using the win2000 cd while the PC
was on (I believe the msg I recied when I clicked on the
cd was "Do you want to upgrade NOW?").

I select NFTS as file format and proceeded as instructed.
The installation informed me that it would automatically
reboot 4 times during the process. When the PC rebooted
for the first time (during the intial hardware check), it
no longer recognized the Hard Drive (I am assuming because
of NFTS format, but not certain).

As a second test, I also inserted another Hard Drive with
NFTS format and Win 2000 OS into this PC, and
recieved "NLT DR is missing" message during the startup
process.

How do I correct this so that my PC recognzes the win2000
OS on the NFTS hard drive?

Save yourself some time and trouble, given that you'll more than likely end
up with an unstable OS with all the remnants/ corruption left behind from
the upgrade. Best to blow it all away and go for the clean install.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 CD-Rom or setup disks.
The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom; change
to the \bootdisk directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos)
or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

During Windows 2000 setup, at some point, will want to confirm the previous
operating system for the upgrade; at that point you'll simply insert the
qualified product install CD for it to verify. Then the install will
proceed.

Check the pc, mb or hardware manufacturer's web site for the latest bios and
or Windows 2000 drivers for your devices.

Note:
You didn't mention the drive controller (possibly SCSI, or ultra DMA, or
ATA100, or raid, or serial ATA), but you may need to boot the Windows 2000
setup disks or CD-Rom and *F6* very early and very important (at setup is
inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection,
and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to
insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver for your drive's
controller in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows 2000 Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

As far as the other drive these articles may help.

Hi Dave,
Thank you for your response. I have some followup
questions.

I already reformatted the hard drive from the old PC and
installed w2000.

The drive controller on the old PC is ultra dma, I think.

Once the PC restarted, it did not recognize the hard drive
and gave me a "System Disk Missing" error.
I rebooted and tapped continuously on "F6" and the Win2000
loaded normally.

You might have anwsered this in your initial response, but
I did not understand parts of it.
How do I update (either the Bios or System Check at start
of the boot or whatever it is) to recognize my reformatted
hard drive?

Download the controller driver from the manufacturer. Have it ready on a
3.5" floppy. Then *F6* very early and very important (at setup is inspecting
your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection, and select
S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to insert the
manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver for your ultra dma controller in
drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows 2000 Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

Hi Dave,

Encountered 2 problems following your instructions:

1) Madly tapping "F6" while the PC boots does not cause
anything to happen with the exception of the following
message "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS
ENTER". I tried it 1/2 dozen times, with the same results.
I obviously never got to the point where I had to type "S".

What can I do here?

2) I cannot get the upgraded drive for the drive
controller because I have no idea how to tell who the
manufacturer is.

How do I pull this off?

Thank you again for your time and patience.

1.) The message means the system has attempted to find a drive to boot from,
but failed. Try creating and booting from the floppies since you CD-Rom
isn't bootable.

2.) You can pop the lid and get the FCC ID number off of your controller and
identify it here.
