upgrade from beta 2 to rc1 fails

When trying to upgrade from beta 2 to rc1 installation fails with the message
"Windows installation cannot continue because a required driver could not be
installed." Not a terribly helpful error message and it seems odd that a
driver that installed under the beta would not install now. How do I get to
the bottom of this?

I've got the same error. Unplugged every USB device I had, even mouse, and
left PS/2 keyboard plugged in, no success. Tried to upgrade install from
reboot off DVD, but of course this is disabled. Next I guess I'll try is
upgrade from safe mode (which I am sure is not allowed either).

And ain't it great to be overwhelmed with answers? Does so much to boost
one's confidence that the problem will be fixed in the final product.

Here's what else I've tried, to no avail:

-Safe Mode: won't allow an upgrade install, only new install.

-Repair Windows from boot DVD: doesn't have the kind of "repair Windows
installation" that WinXP does from the boot up recovery options.

- Yanked out my PCI Modem and TV tuner cards - read somewhere that some
people had installation issues with the modem installed, but it didn't help.

I have always had some device that windows can't identify and install, but I
even disabled that from the device manager, and I think it wasn't even an
issue when I unplugged all USB devices anyway.

I'm afraid to open my Outlook 2007 TR2 because it says not to unless you've
upgraded to RC1, and I'm trapped here in Beta 2.
