How should I proceed with installing Windows 2000 when I
have 98? Thanks.

Save yourself some time and trouble, given that you'll more than likely end
up with an unstable OS with all the remnants/ corruption left behind from
the upgrade. Best to blow it all away and go for the clean install.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 CD-Rom or setup disks.
The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom; change
to the \bootdisk directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos)
or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

During Windows 2000 setup, at some point, will want to confirm the previous
operating system for the upgrade; at that point you'll simply insert the
qualified product install CD for it to verify. Then the install will
proceed.

Check the pc, mb or hardware manufacturer's web site for the latest bios and
or Windows 2000 drivers for your devices.

Pat,

I have just done what you're thinking of doing, and I recommend you take the
advice of the previous poster. I tried the "upgrade 98 SE option" and it
only lead to instability. After taking the clean install route, everything
is now stable. Of course, this take a bit more work -- like backing off all
your documents, etc. -- but it's worth it. 2000 has a somewhat smaller
footprint, is lighter, and much better error recovery.

Regards.

What you relly need to do firts is to run software
complian the if it is complian wiht all the hardware the
go head and star loading win200..

Simply insert the Win2K Upgrade installation CD and follow the
on-screen prompts.

Before proceeding, though, you'd better take a few minutes to
ensure that there are Win2K device drivers available for your PC's
specific components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically
designed for WinMe. Have you made sure the PC is capable of
supporting Win2K? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp). Also bear in mind
that computers designed for, and sold with, WinMe very often fail to
meet Win2K's much more stringent hardware quality requirements.
