upgrade from 6 to 7 help

Greetings,
I am having trouble upgrading from IE6 to IE7 on my Win xp sp2. First of
all, I tried to upgrade Java to 5.0? and kept getting a msg. "not a valid
win32 Application" so I have tried several things. I uninstalled the Java I
had, and tried again with no luck. So, I thought I would upgrade IE7,
thinking that would help, but I cant it to work. The IE7 starts to load and
then hangs, and the only thing I can do is reboot thru.the task magr. I did
a system restore back a few days and it brought back IE6 so I could at least
try to download IE7 again, but that failed again.
What else can I try?
Thanks,
Jim

Having managed to install you may need these for your problems - which
should not be posted in this group.
IE7 questions should be posted to the Internet Explorer General newsgroup as

1. Required reading IMHO before installing IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO THE LETTER!

[And I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update. Make *certain* that you
check in at Windows Update immediately after installing IE7 and install any
critical updates offered. If Optional Updates category offers Root
Certificates update, I recommend installing it to take full advantage of
IE7's additional security.]

2. Updating Sun Java Runtime:

* Download/install jre v1.6.0_03 [Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3] via
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

* Via Add/Remove Programs, uninstall anything that says Sun Java, Java JRE,
or similar *except* "Java TM 6 Update 3" which you just installed.

* In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Java <=this folder[/b].
Delete any subfolders *except* the subfolder "jre1.6.0_03" which was just
created by the installation above.

=> Do NOT delete C:\Program Files\JavaVM <=this folder, if found!
