upgrade error

I just tried to upgrade from XP Standard to XP Pro, and I
received the following error message:
Setup was unable to start tbsrv because of the following
error. OpenService (tabsrv) returned error 1060(424).

I haven't been able to find anything about this yet, and
I can't continue the upgrade until this problem is
resolved.
I haven't had the computer long but for some reason, I
was unable to backup my files before trying the upgrade.
I went ahead with it anyway because, while it would be
annoying to lose some of the things I have on the system,
there is nothing I can't afford to lose.
Can anyone suggest a course of action? Thanks,

tj

Have you tried rebooting and seeing if the install will pick up and
continue? Also ensure that you have disconnected unnecessary peripherals
like scanners, camera, printers etc. before upgrading.

You say "for some reason you were unable to backup..." Was that due to
system problems or issues beyond the computer like not having enough time or
whatever. If the problem was due to the system not being able to backup
there is a possibility that you have hardware problems that are stalling the
setup.

It acted more like it couldn't find the backup utility. I
really don't have any peripherals beyond mouse, keyboard,
and monitor.

I did have a separate issue, come to think of it. I tried
to download and install a Windows update last night, and
it would download but not install. It just acted like it
couldn't figure out where to put the download. The first
time I tried to download from the System Tray update
alert, it told me the download wasn't Windows approved.
I had thought that if something was missing, the upgrade
would take care of it.

Setup won't pick back up. If I start from the disk, it
will ask me if I want to continue, but after it reboots
itself, I get the Windows page, and then a black screen
with only the Setup style cursor. I gave it 30 minutes,
but it never went any further than that.
