Having said that, I would be interested in trying to softmod my card
to get the 9700 level of performance. If someone could provide a link
to a place that could walk me through that process I'd appreciate it.

There is, unfortunately, no such mod :-( Only the 9500 non-pro is moddable
to a 9700.
