updating windows

i m having problems updating my windows xp when i try to
scan for updates i get an error it doesn t give me e\an
error # it just says that the scan failed

What error number?

Locate the WindowsUpdate.log file under \Windows or \Winnt. Open it and
scroll to the bottom. Look at the error codes and compare them against this
site:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
