Do I have to uninstall XP Home edition before I can install XP Professional? I really want to keep XP Home as there are a lot of features I use.

XP Pro includes all the programs that XP Home does. You can upgrade to XP
Pro from Home if you purchase either an upgrade XP pro CD or a full version.
There is no reason to uninstall XP home first. Your files, programs and
settings should remain intact, but you might like to backup all your data
files beforehand.

XP Pro includes all the programs that XP Home does. You can upgrade to XP
Pro from Home if you purchase either an upgrade XP pro CD or a full version.
There is no reason to uninstall XP home first. Your files, programs and
settings should remain intact, but you might like to backup all your data
files beforehand.

Consider why you would need Pro! Most home users would not need the extra
features that are in Pro that are primarily used in advanced networking and
systems wide security settings for businesses. (Home doesn't have some of
those features). If you get Pro, just get the upgrade version, as it will,
99.9% of the time, upgrade flawlessly (unless you have an outage or failure
of some kind during the process, there are no guarantees).

I can't even get the online support shown here because my Installation is so stalled out that I can't even get the PID number to enter for the on-line support.
I just paid $200 for Windows XP Pro Upgrade and I'm so sorry I did.
I keep getting different error codes and thought I'd just go ahead and reformat my hard drive to elimate data file errors. No such luck. Even the recovery disk won't work on my Windows 98 SE now because of the partial installation.
I get the blue screen and tried the chkdsk/r function suggested and all I can get is Scandisk which runs flawlessly, which doesn't solve any problem for me.
With an installation so messed up, how would I get the PID number off my Windows XP Pro in order to get some semblance of help for the miserable experiences I've had without being charged by Microsoft to get their brand new product operational?

of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:

hardware components or applications.
You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's

I had Windows 98 SE and it worked fine. I found that there were a growing
number of programs which were not supported by anything less than Windows
2000, so I decided to upgrade. I got a copy of XP Pro and installed it over
98.
All hell has now broken loose on my system. I can't access most of my old
programs, IE doesn't work at all - I get a message saying:

I get "mini-hangs" where the screen flickers and I can't type anything for
about a second or so.
I get blue screens at startup and I keep getting asked for networking
permissions, despite my computer being a stand-alone system and not connected
to any others.
Since install three days ago, I've picked up enough viruses to kill half the
world's population, enough worms to stock a good-sized compost heap and
enough Trojans to scare Achilles and the entire Ancient Greek army to death.
I've run SpyBot, AdAware and PCPitstop Optimizer several times (but I can't
access PCPitstop itself because I can't use IE :-( ). I've now managed to
retrieve Zone Alarm and my AntiVirus program and get them working with XP,
but I think the damage is done :-(. I got the occasional intruder before,
but NOTHING like this lot.
I've also got a toolbar I can't delete with options I can't remove ("Hot
Dating", "Casino Play" and stuff like that) - and so on and so on and so on.
I've also got something called "Safely Remove Hardware" stuck in my system
tray. Like that toolbar, it's got no right click option and can't be removed.
I don't think there's anything I haven't got :-(.
My hard disk is partitioned into three sections - C: D: and E: with about 13
gigs of space on D: and E:. I've been told to format my C: drive, but I'm
reluctant to do that in case I can't access my computer at all because my A:
drive hasn't worked for months, so I can't use a rescue floppy if I can't
access my CD ROM drive :-(.

before you started?

What you've given so far:
Upgrade from 98SE to win XP Pro failed.
Floppy drive is bad/does not work
Scandisk runs and completes, showing that the HD structure and general
contents are not corrupt from the file management standpoint. Scandisk is
not a normal part of win XP. It sounds like you are still running 98SE.
You have problem with the CD Drive.
Your major complaints:
XP Pro upgrade failed.
Internet access using IE is not working properly, but does work with Fire
Fox.
Lots of Malware present.
Hardware is malfunctioning.

Floppy drives are relatively cheap. Check the cable connections and BIOS
entries for the floppy drive before you replace it.
Some older computers cannot boot from a CD. This can be due to the CD Drive,
or lack of BIOS support. This sort of problem makes a floppy a key part of
such a system.
You may not have enough free space on your hard drive, or enough space in
the partition you are installing XP Pro into.
You may have a badly fragmented Hard drive.
Starting the Path to recovery.
Get the hardware straightened out. (Floppy, etc.)
Make sure the BIOS settings are correct.
BIOS may contain an area that needs to be cleared of it's present settings.
Older systems had a BIOS option to do this.
(This issue is extremely dependent on the motherboard hardware, chipset,
processor, etc., and may require the use of a BIOS utility that is also used
to upgrade the BIOS.)
Your motherboard may need chipset drivers that are not part of windows XP
Pro, or more current versions may be available.
Your BIOS version may be out of date, and require an update to be compatable
with XP.
Hard Drives are currently fairly inexpensive. It may be simpler to
disconnect the old drive, install a new hard drive, and do a "clean" install
of Win XP. The old drive may then be connected as a secondary drive, or
perhaps placed in an external USB drive enclosure. (If you have USB support
on your system.).

drive hasn't worked for months, so I can't use a rescue floppy if I can't
access my CD ROM drive :-(.
