updating links from Powerpoint during slideshow

I want to use to update a linked object on a Powerpoint (2000) slide during a
presentation. (I want to update the object from an Excel spreasheet
real-time.) If I manually update the links when I open the presentation, the
link updates, but I haven't figured out how to get the link to update during
a presentation. I've tried a few things but haven't found anything that
works.

(One thing is that the link seems to be broken after a slideshow.)

Suggestions?
