Hi,
Can someone please help me.
I cannot update as I always get a balloon with the error message:
WD was unable to complete the update:
0x8024401b.
I have read many threads but I havent seen this error code.
Can someone please tell me if I need to install some patch to correct this
problem.
Please help!

I believe that error is proxy server related.

Can you describe the machine and how it connects to the Internet--what
network is involved?

One quick thing to try--go to Internet Explorer, tools, Internet Options,
connections tab, and press either Lan settings or settings near the dialup
listing, as appropriate.

Look at the proxy settings. If you are aware of no proxy being involved,
make sure those settings all are empty--even if they are grayed out (check
them and remove whatevers there, and then uncheck).

Check the "Automatically Detect" box if it is unchecked, or uncheck it if it
is checked.

Does Windows Update work? That should offer you Windows defender updates,
as well.

Thanks for the prompt reply Bill.
I have installed WD on my office laptop (OS:Windows 2000 SP4) . Yes, I
connect to the internet through a proxy server and I need to enter the Proxy
authentication user name and password every time I open a new Explorer window
to surf the net. I have tried Windows update manually but that fails as well
though it asks for the Proxy authentication user name and password. But when
I try to update WD, it dosent even ask for the authentication and
straightaway gives the error message with the error code that I had provided.
Also, I can not remove the proxy settings coz then the server would not allow
me to browse the net.
Does this mean that I will not be able to install any updates for windows if
I am using the proxy.
Your comments will be deeply appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi again,
I forgot to mention that in the Internet Options, the Automatically Detect
Settings box and the Use Automatic Configuration Script box is checked with
the Proxy Server address entered in the address field of the latter.

You are on a corporate network that controls what updates are offered via a
central server of some kind.

That might be SUS or WSUS, from Microsoft, or some other mechanism
completely from a third-party.

If they are using WSUS, and want to allow the updates to be offered, the
administrator can authorize the new class of updates for Windows Defender.

You may be able to tell what is happening, and what mechanism is involved,
by doing:

help, about, check for updates (within Windows defender)

Then go do:

start, run, notepad %windir%\windowsupdate.log and hit enter.

This file may be very large, and take awhile to be usable in Notepad. When
it settles, go to the very end of the file and cut and paste that very last
session into a reply in this thread--or just read through it yourself and
see whether it references a SUS or WSUS server.

In either case, you're going to need to talk to the network administrators
at your company about whether they wish to allow this app on company
machines, and provide updates for it.
(and, don't let me forget--such updates are only available over WSUS--SUS
has an end of life of December 2006, so everyone should have a migration
plan in hand.)

Hello Bill,
I dont know if there is any reference of any kind to SUS or WSUS. Can you
please check it for me in the text below which I have copied from the windows
update log.

That seems very clear--it is trying to use the proxy, and failing.
My understanding is that it should be using the IE settings, and that if
they are working for IE, they should work for Windows Defender.
Can you go to Windows Update successfully? That should offer you Windows
Defender signature updates.

Hello Bill,
As I had written earlier, even manual updates of any kind from the windows
update site are also not possible. I think its just not possible to fix this
bug, eventually I will have to uninstall WD.
Thanks for your help anyway.

My sense is that this isn't a bug. Access to AutoUpdate and WindowsUpdate
is being controlled by corporate policy on your business network, and that
policy does not yet include allowing the signature updates for Windows
Defender. Have you made any inquiries about this--to a help desk, say?
