Microsoft has seen data indicating that some customers have been updating
ATI video drivers (atikmdag.sys) and Intel Networking drivers
(NETw2v32.sys)
from the vendor's websites or from Windows Update.

Unfortunately at this time the drivers obtained from these sites are OLDER
than
those shipped with recent Vista builds. These old drivers have a number of
blue screen issues which have been fixed in the drivers currently shipping
with recent
Vista builds.

Microsoft recommends that users NOT replace their inbox ATI or Intel
drivers
with drivers from the manufacturer's websites or from Windows Update until
newer drivers can be propagated there. This applies to Vista builds near
to
RC1.

With the Intel drivers I have found exactly the opposite to be true. The
latest Vista drivers were available at the Intel Website about 6 weeks since
the were approved and were available form Vista WinUpdate. From other posts
it appeared also that the latest Vista drivers at the ATI Website are also
newer then those from Vista Winupdate but since I do not have an ATI card I
have not actually confirmed this..

I hope that in the final release of Vista that driver issues are more
automatically invoked than manually invoked.

Is it likely to be so?

By the time of the final release of Vista all of the hardware suppliers
should have released to MS all of the drivers for the products that they
plan to support for Vista. Certainly some older products will not longer be
supported since the effort to create Vista drivers for them will not be
considered economical by the vendors. Certainly some of the manufacturers
Vista driever wtill not be approved by MS in time for the RTM release,
however I am sure that many will be downloaded during the check for updates
part of the released product installation..

I doubt cmedia will get their act together for their new drivers for their
most basic motherboard chipsets used by manufactures like asus.

I've been using the win xp drivers, and it works...barely. I have a 7.1
surround sound system set up and all I get is the center speaker.
