Updating a field does not work

In Word 2003 trying to update a field by any method does not work. It only
works if I right click the field, select Edit then select OK. How do I fix
the problem. Creating a new Normal.dot does not solve the problem.

How are you trying to update the field. There are a number of ways:

Select it and press F9
Do a Print Preview (the update fields option should be set under
Tools>Options>Print)

Are you by any chance trying to put the field in a text box? Text boxes are
in the drawing layer of the document rather than the text layer and fields
in them are unreliable. To update fields in the text layers - attach the
macro code at http://www.gmayor.com/installing_macro.htm to a toolbar
button.
