updates

I recently had to reload all the software from the restore
CD and of course Winxp now needs to be updated again with
all the patches and security updates. Fortunately, I
still have my cable connection for now but, I would like
to go back to dial up soon and I want to be prepared for
the next time. Does anybody know if I can stop the
automatic download AND install process of win updates so
that I could transfer the updates to CD for future
unstallation so that I do not have to download them again.

You can download the updates from windowsupdate, yes and store them on
a CD.

On windowsupdate, go to the Personalize Windows Update section and
check the "Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog" checkbox

Then you download the patches from the "Windows Update Catalog" which
now should appear in the left pane.

In addition to the good advice already given..

Order the Windows Security Update CD
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp

Has all the updates through October 2003.

If you want to create your own you can as well.. (At least for XP):

SP1a
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/sp1lang.asp
(134 MB | 5.5 hours @ 56K | 11 minutes @ T1)

For all other patches/updates:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=323166

You can save a lot of time/space getting SP1a and then the SP1 rollup
package...

Download the Update Rollup 1 for Microsoft Windows XP from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...00-d7be-48e3-abcc-961602bd72c2&displaylang=en
Short Link: http://tinyurl.com/r4lh

(SP1a and the Rollup covers a LOT of what is on the CD, I believe - for XP
users anyway.)

Thanks for the tip. I cannot seem to be able to do this
though. For example, when the windowsupdate function
finishes it finds 2 critical updates. Then, I can
click "critical udpates" in the left pain and then click
the "review and install updates" button and then
the "install" button. At no time can I download and save
them. If I click the "windows update catalog" button, as
you suggest, all identified updates go away and I am offer
a new "find updates" button which is not automated at all
but, rather must be directed to the appropriate files...
which I am not capable of doing. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks.

I downloaded and installed both SP1a and the rollup files
and the process seemed flawless. However, when I go to
windows updates.com I find that the same 13 critical
updates are still being suggested. Shouldn't some or all
of these been taken care of by these programs? Thanks.

Thanks for the great tips. I have not had success with
the process via downloading and I am still waiting for the
CD though. In the meantime, my system keeps reminding me
that the updates have been downloaded and is requesting to
install them. Would you happen to have anyidea where they
might be and if I could capture them there? Thanks again.
