when i visit the microsoft updates site should i always
download all the updates it tells me i need.or should i
be more selective?

I prefer to be selective. Check on what things are about, and see if
they might be relevant to you. For example, there are quite a lot that
are specific to servers - on a stand alone machine they are not
relevant. And another set relates to attacks by an attacker 'able to
connect or logon', who could then take control. These are really only
of importance to a corporation that needs to protect itself against any
potentially disaffected employee. Other than those (and there are about
14 or them at present) I would install all critical updates, and then
those in the recommended list that are of interest to *your* system.
