I've got a Windows XP SP2 laptop that will not iinstall security
updates. It doesn't matter if I do it through Windows Update or download
them individually. Via Windows Update the download fails. When I
download them and try to run them, it gives an error that the extraction
failed due to a corrupt file. I tried to extract the files instead of
just running the update and that failed, too. All these downloads can't
be corrupt, can they? I am logging on as "THE" administrator, not just
an account with admin priviledges. Any ideas other than reformat?

Thanks.

Purge your Temporary Internet Folder, also might be good to empty
C:\Windows\Temp and your local profile temp folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\'YourAccountName'\Local Settings\Temp
Emptying the Temp folders is best done immediately after a boot.

Did you disable your anti virus' auto scan before downloading and installing
the updates?

Good suggestions. As soon as I can pry it from the hands of the user
I'll give them a try.

1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of

3a. Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) for errors
associated with the download/install.
