Hello,

I am having some strange problems...my pc has windows xp home edition
with sp2.

1. I cannot run the firefox installation exe files...it stops with
file extract failed error.
2. The Windows Update always fails with 0x80070002 error. I have done
a lot of thing but couldn't make it fixed.
3. To fix the problem 2 above, I have downloaded an MS patch KB922582,
but it cannot be extracted as well. It fails with 'file is
corrupted'...but I believe it's not.
4. The PC cannot boot with safe mode for some reason.

These things seem to be linked somehow...but I just have no idea what
is the problem...

Thanks,

John

Let's start by trying to narrow down the reasons for the problems:

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

Thanks for the help.

I have done some cleanup using anti-virus and anti-spyware software
and my PC is now almost clean but with only one problem that I cannot
understand. The problem is that I still see a large amount of network
traffic from Windows Task Manager when I have absolutely no
application running. I did some investigation and found out that the
svchost.exe is the one who does it...the one started with "C:\WINDOWS
\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunch". By the way, I have stopped Windows
Firewall using ZoneAlarm and turn off Windows Auto Update as well. I
then used the Packet Analyzer and found that the traffic is HTTP/TCP
that it tried to establish the connection with some websites (the
websites changes over the time). The connection dropped right away
after it established and this process repeated all the time...

I have no idea why it does it and how bad it is...I checked the
svchost.exe and found no problem with the file.

Any help is highly appreciated.

Thanks,

John
