Updates have caused the network startup to lag

Hi,
I just installed XP updates available on the microsoft
web site ( a whole lot of them) and since then, when I
switch on my laptop, the XP loads but it takes a very
long time (approx 1 min) for the network components and
other programmes that depend on the network to stat
working(even the icons in bottom right corner dont
appear).
any help would be appriciated.
