Supposedly, the new updates, out yesterday, will fix a number of bugs in
Vista like slow file transferring.

This performance update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941649 improved my
boot time from ~ 45sec to ~ 25sec.

This USB update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941600 , installed...but as
I had no previous issues can't comment on.

The media center update http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=941229 did not
install. Dont need it.

The WMP update is not available yet. The most recent WMP update is a hotfix
AFAIK.

I installed those updates last night, and my computer (Dimension 8400
upgraded to Vista Ultimate from XP) failed to start after the reboot. I
tried to fix the problem by booting from the Vista DVD and running the
startup repair utility. It reported that something was broken that it could
not fix. I wound up doing a Complete PC Restore to get running again.

Did you disable your Anti Virus' auto scan before installing the updates?

Why don't you offer him Ubuntu? After all, you ARE their marketing
department. Just FYI

No. I have never done that, and I have never had a problem with Microsoft
updates before. In fact, I updated two computers last night, and the newer
one, a laptop, started up fine after the reboot with the same antivirus
running throughout.

You were lucky. Try to install the updates on the computer in question
without auto scan on. Or be stubborn and don't do it; it's your computer.

I tried to help and all you can do is make an ass out of yourself again.

I think that the more logical conclusion is not to install the updates on
the Dimension at all pending some more information on possible problems with
one or more of them on some systems.

I having the same problem. I installed this update on 3 PCs, 2 working fine.
but 1 stuck at boot screen.
Have to use Windows Complete Backup to restore my OS.

I ran into the same problem installing on my Gateway laptop. I had to use
the install DVD to to be able to boot again. I couldn't even go into the
safe mode command line. I hope MS has some resolution for this fairly
quickly. Everytime the Explorer crashes the "Problem Reports and Solutions"
window points me to this update. I would feel more comfortable turning off
the auto scan on my Norton 360 if the MS KB listed it as a requirement.

Because the Vista updates won't do any better on Ubuntu?
