Updates done without SUS Server

Hi,
I'm trying to push updates out to computers based on the computer name,
however they are not installing. I've added the computers to a computer
OU, and put the updates.msi files into the publish software thing under
the OU for that computer, but they don't work. Any idea as to where to
even start looking?

Matt -
I think you have to push the .MSI file with the GPO implied on that OU. And
you have to check if you have already approved those updates on SUS server.

Matt,

I might assign the GPO to the OU that holds the computer account objects
rather than publish it. You can only assign to computer account objects but
you can assign and publish to user account objects.

By assigning a GPO you are telling that GPO, "Install whatever I am telling
you to install at either the next computer reboot or user logon on". When
you publish a GPO you are telling that GPO, "Go ahead and make yourself
available to the user but do not install. Let the user have the choice of
when to install". The user would then need to go into Control Panel |
Add/Remove Programs | Add New Programs to install the published application.

My mistake... I didn't just mean publish but assigned it also... still
no go. perhaps I'm doing it wrong?

I go into the group policy for the OU, create a published/assigned MSI
install of the MSI for the program, and then they reboot and wala, nothing.

Matt,

Do the computers have access to the shared folder? Remember, there are
both Share as well as NTFS permissions. I usually give 'Domain Computers'
access to the shared folder when I am deploying GPOs to the computer
configuration side of things.

Have you tried troubleshooting the GPO?
