Updates and service packs

Phil

Under Add/Remove Programs I have a bunch of hotfixes
labelled "Windows XP Hotfix" and many "(SP2)". Should the
first been deleted when SP1 was installed? Will the (SP2)
hotfixes be deleted when SP2 comes along or will I have to
delete these myself? I understood that an SP incorporated
all the hotfixes, updates, that preceded it. True?
Thanks, Phil

Hi Phil,

Installing a Service Pack generally will remove all the hotfix entries that
it replaces. The (SP2) entries will likely be gone when you install it
(after it's been released of course).

It is unnecessary to keep them if you do not want to uninstall any hotfixes.
MVP Doug Knox has written a small utility that will clean them up for you if
you do not wish to do it manually. Check the utilities section of

They may/may not get deleted. It could be that the service pack will "skip"
an update if it is already installed.

Rick and Yves, Thanks for reply and info. Ran Doug Knox
utility and all the Hotfix listing under Add/Remove
Programs disappeared. Turns out these were back up
files. Did Disk clean, defrag, restart and humming along
beautifully. Also, makes me feel better all that
extraneious stuff out of system. Thanks, Phil
