When I run update the laptop advises updating
from definitions 5725 to 5733 and gives me a succesful
update message. When I run update again it updated once
again from 5725 to 5733. I tried shutting down, etc. Also
when I highlite the software definitions the message
reads 5725.

Have you seen and tried the solution found by Robin Walker [MVP] ? If not,
then try it:

"After much debugging, I have found that the problem with definition update
failures and repetition is because of an incorrect version of the file
gcUnCompress.dll in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ (for XP) or C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\ (for
2000 or systems upgraded from 2000).

The incorrect version is of length 130,272 bytes.
The correct version is of length 95,448 bytes.

To update your system to install the correct version of the file, do the
following:

1. In the System Notification Area, right-click on the MSAS icon and select
"Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware".
2. In Explorer, navigate to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\, locate the file
"gcUnCompress.dll", right-click on it, and select "Delete".
3. In Control Panel "Add or Remove Programs", select "Microsoft AntiSpyware"
and click button "Change".
4. Click "Next".
5. Select "Update Microsoft AntiSpyware", click "Next".
6. Click "Install".
7. When the re-installation finishes, click "Finish".
8. In Explorer, in folder C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\, check that
"gcUnCompress.dll" is now 95,448 bytes long, by right-clicking it and
selecting "Properties".
9. Launch MSAS, pull down the File menu and select "Check for updates" -
this time it really will update your definition files to the latest version.
10. In Explorer, open the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware, and
satisfy yourself that the modification dates of the three definition files
have changed:
gcDeterminationData.gcd
gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd
gcThreatAuditScanData.gcd

Done!

You won't ever have to manually install the definition files again, nor will
the update keep repeating every time you try."

I tried the "fix" reported by Robin Walker, BUT after
successfully updating to 5733, it would NOT update to
5735. Kept saying it was installed, but wasn't. To get
5735, I had to do a manual install (steps 1 and then 3
thru 7) so I don't think this procedure is the answer, at
least not on my 2 machines. I'm running Windows XP, not
2000. By the way the manual update (step 1 and then
steps 3 thru 7) works fine regardless of which version of
gcUnCompress.dll is present on my machines.

Sorry but that DOES NOT WORK! I tried Robin Walker's
suggestion on three (3) separate systems (XP PRO, Tablet
PC 2005 & Windows Server 2003) They all keep repeating
the update from 5733 to 5735!

Before attempting an MSAS definitions update, you must empty your Temporary
Internet Files, also checking the option "Delete all offline content" on the
way.

Can you go back and check the size of the gcUnCompress.dll file on those
machines? Let us know whether it is still 130k, or the proper 95k size?

Are you running Spybot Search & Destroy with both protective options enabled
on these machines?

Is THAT a "solution"?
Just one more crappy windows piece of shit!

I have the same problem (as many others, it appears).
Does Microsoft have an answer? If they can't fix it, no
one will use this software because they could not be sure
if it uses the latest updates or not.

I copied this out of another message/reply. It solved
that same problem for me.

Hello,

This is a quote from Robin Walker:

After much debugging, I have found that the problem with
definition update
failures and repetition is because of an incorrect
version of the file
gcUnCompress.dll in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ (for XP) or
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\
(for
2000 or systems upgraded from 2000).

The incorrect version is of length 130,272 bytes.
The correct version is of length 95,448 bytes.

To update your system to install the correct version of

select "Microsoft

You won't ever have to manually install the definition
files again, nor
will
the update keep repeating every time you try.
