It is faster. But Firegraphic 6 is even faster.
(just my subjective feeling, no measurements)

It would take all day to describe the features of Irfanview, and a day
more for Xnview and Firegraphic.

They are all graphic viewers/organizers.
They allow you to watch a picture or a whole directory of pictures.
(pictures and other media files, see each program for details)

They all have some built-in basic image processing features, like
cropping, adjusting color, etc..

In Firegraphic I can set what external picture editors I want to use,
one of them will be the default. You can use Pixia, Photofiltre, etc

I often try Irfanview but it is so confusing so I give up and I have
been using XnView now for some time. XnView has basically the same
functions as Irfanview but it works in a way I can understand and use.

Since yesterday I am testing Firegraphic6 instead.

I understand that if I used Irfanview a lot I would probably learn how
it works and appreciate all the features it has. But using it only
occasionally doesn't work. I forget how to handle it, and it doesn't
work in a natural way.

Better for who, Frank? It depends on your needs to say which program
is the one for you. My suggestion is to try them both and decide for
yourself.

Actually I use both Irfanview and Xnview, but has anyone looked at
Multimedia Explorer, not as a replacement for either but as a supplement.
Moon Software has made it freeware since Feb. 2003, and I am using it (tho
not frequently) ;) on XP home and seem to have no problem. Just in case you
want to take a look, here's the link:

Enjoy

which is sound advise, of course, but I'm so lazy. ;-)

From 1999. It did not uninstall here (could not find install.log,
although that file was right there in the prgr. folder), so I had to
uninstall it manually.

I played with it for an hour last night to see if I could use it as a handy
picture viewer. It loads way too slowly, and from FULL screen view you must
press ESC 3 times to exit! You would think pressing ESC 1 time would be
enough! :-\

But, it's still a nice program. It's nice for quick editing, and very
flexible with a nice configurator.

as already posted, it's a matter of taste.
In XnView I miss the fine rotation. It allows only in steps of 1
degree. I often need it for scanned pictures.

Conversely, I tried XnView but greatly preferred IrfanView's interface,
which I find in no way confusing. I just LOVE the single-letter shortcuts.
