amit

hi, on friday last, i was working on my laptop. at about 2.00 in the night
after i finished working i closed all the drawing files after saving.
then went to surf the net. as soon as i opened the ie, i got a prompt
- windows update available. also that ie8 was available. i clicked
both and after the download the computer restarted. i surfed the net -
usual sites. then i check my folder and all the sub folders had
dissappared. the files were stored as follows - main folder AMIT -
subfolders -
DWG, Photos, Beetle, Misc, Home, etc. sub-subfolders in DWG-
A.S.anand, ..... , Reliance, etc upto Z.
The funny part is a few of the sub-subfolders are visible. to be precise,
from S to Z are visible including the contents inside !
Tried various thing till date including sending the laptop to the service
station (toshiba) to recover the data if any but they could not find any at
all !
any ideas ?
I have not yet formatted the disk and NAV did not find any virus.
amit.

Any ideas about what? I'd very much doubt that installing IE8 caused those
files to go missing, amit.

Hi "PA Bear",
Before the update I was working on those files. ACAD files. Now in the
folder only few files are visible. Data recovery did not find any so they are
not lost (I hope) but hidden somewhere on the disk. If I do a system restore,
the folders become visible again but no data inside. Again I do the update,
the folders are gone !!

amit.

Are you running WinXP SP2 or SP3?

Do NOT use System Restore to "undo" an update or IE upgrade! Uninstall it
via Add/Remove Programs instead. See http://bertk.mvps.org/html/tips.html#6

How to uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

It's possible that your ACAD program is not compatible with IE8. If so, do
not (approve the) install (of) IE8 again.

No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage
(only) is available via the phone based on your locale through 31 December
2009. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows Vista in a non-domain
environment.
=> US & CA Residents: 1-866-234-6020
=> Other locales: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?&prid=13043

My personal recommendations include:

=> Install IE8 manually, not via Windows Update/Automatic Updates!! =>
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/worldwide-sites.aspx

NB: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it. When you're prepared
to install IE8, double-click on the saved file.

NB: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it. When you're prepared
to install IE8, right-click on the saved file and select "Run as
Administator.

=> Uninstall all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google; Yahoo; Windows Live)
and third-party Windows Themes before installing IE8.

=> Close all open applications (i.e., anything with a taskbar icon) before
installing or uninstalling IE8.

=> I would strongly recommend disabling your anti-virus application and any
anti-spyware application's "system protections" (other than Defender's)
before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're running a
third-party firewall, I would recommend disabling it and then enabling the
Windows Firewall before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade.

=> Create a Restore Point manually before installing IE8. [Do NOT use
System Restore to remove/uninstall IE8; instead, see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700. Then use the Restore Point prior to
reinstalling IE8 per these recommendations. Norton users will need to see
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/symantecdoc1.html.]

=> Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8, then check-in at
Windows Update and install any critical security updates offered.

=> For best chance of success with IE8, make certain that your anti-virus
application, any anti-spyware applications (other than Defender), and your
third-party firewall (if any) are supported in IE8 Final before you decide
install it.

Dear PA Bear,
I am runing sp3 build 2600 on my laptop.
ACAD program seems to be compatible since a few folders and the data inside
is visible. Will try uninstalling ie8 and see if the files are visible.
however the last time i did system restore they were still not visible so
lets see.
Will keep you posted. Have emailed MS support also through the earlier link
you posted.
Thanks forthe prompt replies.

It's unlikely that this is related in any way other than timing, to updates.

Don't format the drive. Stop using it so that you stop compounding the
problems.

Remove it and replace it, install XP to the new drive. A new laptop drive
will probably cost $80 - $140, depending on size and speed.

Once that's done, install data recovery software and attempt recovery.
Never attempt to recover to the *same* drive.

If that doesnt' work, consider sending the drive to a real data recovery
service. Expect the bill to start around $1000.

If you don't have backups to restore from, now is a good time to start that
practice.

Good luck. Since the Tobshiba techs have messed around with it, you may
need it.
