I tried this on the windows update site but no answer yet, so I will try
here...

Hello, I have several windows XP workstations that are on a lan. Two have
the update root certificates utility installed one is not having any
problems but the other has been for the past few days giving me the
following event ID error:

============================================================================
==
Event Type: Error
Event Source: crypt32
Event Category: None
Event ID: 8
Date: 10/30/2003
Time: 5:41:49 AM
User: N/A
Computer: N0n0Fy0UrBu$1N3sS
Description:
Failed auto update retrieval of third-party root list sequence number from:
en/authrootseq.txt> with error: 0x2efd

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Going to that website on the machine in question just gives me:

\1401C34121A0BAF589

Whats the deal? I mean... why can't the program actually find the site.
That string of numbers as far as the documention I can find, seems to be in
line with what should be there, though I don't know what it means other then
it helps the program do its job. There doesn't seem to be an interface with
which to manipulate this program, and the events.asp link simply says
microsoft is sorry, which really is quite nice of them, but doesn't solve
the problem. I could always just uninstall the program, and the error
would go away, but I don't want to uninstall the program... I want to fix
it, because I don't know how (though finding out is probably not a problem)
and don't want to update the root certificates manually.

The only thing I do find wierd is that pinging
www.download.windowsupdate.com is actually pinging
download.windowsupdate.com.c.footprint.net, IP 206.24.192.222, but since
that eventually brings me too
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp I think it maybe cool?
Or not...

I'm lost...
