Update problem .NET Framework 1.1

For the past few weeks, I've had a problem with the Automatic Updates. SP1
for .NET Framework 1.1 always downloads and then after a long wait, gives me
a message that it didn't install. When I shut off the PC it tries to
install the update again and after a long interval gives up and shuts down.
I disabled the Automatic Updates and tried to install the SP1 manually, same
problem -- won't install.

I'm not sure I even have .NET Framework installed although it's shown in the
Add-Remove Programs. A search of my systems shows the shortcuts for
Framework Configuration file and the Wizards file, but that's all.

Do I even need .NET Framework 1.1 or should I just use manual updating and
skip over the SP1 file?

Thanks for any help on this.

XP does not need .Net framework. However certain 3rd party programs do. If
you don't have one that requires it, then you can remove .Net framework from
Add/Remove programs and hide those updates on the Microsoft Update site. If
a program needs .Net it will tell you.

For future reference any problems with installing updates from the microsoft
update site should be directed to the experts in the Windows Update
newsgroup. I have included the link for that newsgroup and a list lf MS
public newsgroups.
