Metapad is a small, fast (and completely free) text editor for Windows
9x/NT/XP with similar features to Microsoft Notepad but with many extra
(and rather useful) features.

"A minor new version that fixes the benign but annoying "Can't open
clipboard" random message bug."

Well, at least we know he is alive.

Thanks! I love this little editor. So small, but so fast, cool. It also
recognized HTML links, so you can just click on them to launch your
browser etc.

Thanks. This prog remains my quick text editor. Good to get the
false clipboard error message done away with. Just substituted
metapad for notepad, and will have to do it again, but it's worth
it.

I'm a fan of Metapad too: go on!

A favorite application of mine. Thanks for the heads up!

Great little proggie. Been using it for years. Thanks for the update.

I am editor of a monthly magazine in a small motorclub in Denmark, and
every month I have to export the memberlist from *.xls to *.csv. to
print labels for the magazine.

Some 2-3 years ago, I asked in this group for a prg. that could replace
';' with <newline> in this *.csv-file , and I was recommended MetaPad,
and I have used it since ..

(The labels are after this imported in another freeware app - SenLabel -
and printed...)'

I use many freeware-app's every day, so I am so greatful for all the
freeware-programmers out there, and for the extended support in this
group...:)

Thanx all and a merry x-mas to you and your families...:)

Now here's the kind of response most appreciated, not only by
constituents of a.c.f., but also the freeware authors out there
who keep an eye on us.

FYI, there is a batch file suggested in FAQ 23 as an easier System
File Protection workaround to replacing notepad in Win XP than the
"quick paste" method. Just tried it and it worked perfectly.

Kewl, thanks Ron! Metapad's a keeper! Can't live without this one,
either. It's richedit (clickable links) and small size make it pretty
unbeatable for most uses.

Re the FAQ, do you mean #28?
http://www.liquidninja.com/metapad/faq.html#Q28

Do you know if this works with other flavours of Windows? I've always
used the paste method renaming the original notepad.exe to
notepad.exe.old (I know, I probably don't have to do that, but that's
what I do.) Seems to me that this other method might work for systems
where Windows keeps putting the original notepad back. My Win98SE
hasn't any problems with a simple paste, but I have run into this
every once in a while with computers with Win2K.

[snip]

Thanks for the reference to the FAQs as I'd not had something that
comprehensive before for it. Learned a few things from them
(http://www.liquidninja.com/metapad/faq.html).

I did my usu. html page-save and cleaned it up so it works completely
offline and have placed a copy of that FAQ "help file" in
alt.binaries. freeware for anyone that is interested in this to put
with their metapad source files. Nothing done to it other than remove
reference to the script and to point all links to the same offline
page rather than the one online. Hope this is of help to someone
else.

Cheers. :oD

YW, and yes, I mistyped. It is FAQ #28 that applies to Win XP. FAQ
#17 covers Win 2K. General instructions (for Win9x/ME) are covered in
FAQ #3. (You probably know this by now, so this is more for the
benefit of later readers.)

And thank you for posting the FAQ page. That's a great idea to put a
copy in the Metapad folder.

All this time I had no idea about that. The batch file seems to
have worked perfectly. Great job. Thanks very much. I use metapad
for all my quick work, and a persistently multitabbed editor for
a bunch of files I often have to work on.
