Taken from its manual:

TED Notepad is a freeware editor for true plain-text. It looks like the
original Windows Notepad, but provides many features and tools for
quick, easy and advanced editing. The light-weight application fits on
a floppy or USB and loads instantly with no installation required.
Offers many text-processing functions and tools, many hotkeys and
clipboards. You will find several inovative features too. TED Notepad
is designed especially for daily writing of plain-text documents and
lists. Creating of scripts and html-like files is a joy as well.

Quite extensive set of features covers entire MS Notepad, Metapad or
Win32Pad and includes:

* Enhanced searching and replacing; second search;
* Plenty of hotkeys and some extra clipboards;
* Several kinds of word and phrase completion;
* All unicode characters and bi-directional support;
* Unicode, UTF-8, Unix and Mac file types;
* Text auto-indentation;
* Extensive text statistics;
* Recent and Favourites menu;
* and many, many other timesavers.

Variety of text tools covers most of the text-based functions
including:

* All types of case conversions;
* Advanced text replacing and character translating;
* Line indentation, unindentation, closing and tabifying;
* Columns cutting and adding numbers;
* Reversing of text, lines and words;
* Full-scale line sorting;
* Searching for line duplicates;
* Word wrapping commiting and unwrapping;
* File inclusion and exclusion;
* and Filters Architecture for any user-defined plugins.

Comparing the list of features and the usability, it really can compete
with Metapad in every way.. Actually, Metapad seems to be a lot behind.
Quite impressed.. :))

I don't quite agree.

There are actually two versions:

"The LE clone is the default one. The whole project is oriented to
support, develop and test this one."
However the LE clone does not support URL Autodetection, which is a show
stopper for me as a Notepad (read Metapad) replacement.

The RE clone sports URL Autodetection, but at the price of:
- no CR/LF newline sequences; only LF characters are used
- no Commit Word Wrap is available
lacking any of these two features is a show stopper on its own

I will check out the LE clone, but not as a Notepad/Metapad replacement.
It does look to have an otherwise nice set of features.
