Update KB925902 failed

Today, PTravel made these interesting comments ...
Though it is clear that this patch is causing problems for
some, it's not true for all. The patch is installed on my
laptop running Vista Business. It installed fine, and
everything runs fine.
Let me give MS the benefit of the doubt, although maybe they don't
deserve it. I'm sure it is quite a chore for them to reliably test
everything ever invented to ensure that a patch will work as
planned and not create either side effect bugs nor take anybody
down. But, it just isn't physically possible for any developer to
do that. I don't know what the distribution curve looks like for
the continuum between a totally destroyed system and one with zero
problems, but I'd guess that maybe 90%+ of the people installing
this update are OK. Here in these support NGs we only read about
the problems, not the millions or at least hundreds of thousands of
successes.

I have spent over 4 hours on the phone with Microsoft regarding this issue.
They have admitted that this patch "has problems" when applied to Vista.
Currently there is no fix. Microsoft employees are having to reinstall the
OS on their work computers as well. I have flattened 3 Vista PC's and
(temporarily) re-installed XP.

Good Luck!!!

Well I guess I'm just lucky. The update installed with no problems in Vista
Ultimate. BTW Vista was a clean install. In fact, I've had no problems
with Vista. Just some old hardware and software.

You are not alone. Do a search for kb925902 and you will find several
posts complaining of problems with this update, including mine. My post
was the earliest of the bunch, and so far, nobody, no one has given me a
clue as to what has happened. And the error message I got, 80070000B, when
my machine attempted to install the patch evidently refers to other
operating systems which I do not run, and programs which I am not using.

Rev OOC

The problem is that Microsoft is running out of KB numbers. They've been
using this numbering scheme for so long, their databases are unable to
process any higher numbers.

Love and Kisses,
Doris

A clarification - in Viewed Update History, the update is clearly shown. If
I go to Installed Updates however I can't find it anywhere.

I think the uncertainty principle might apply to this update.

Well, I managed to install KB925902. I manually installed it from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...5c-5b41-46eb-92df-0b062cfcdeec&DisplayLang=en I
copied it to my desktop and installed it from there. So far, so good.

Hello,
That error message implies the package that was downloaded is not the
correct version or is already on the machine or possibly corrupted. If
there was a prerelease package that was installed, you may see this
error.
See if the package is available for uninstall via control panal -
programs
and features - installed updates. Attempt to remove it
Thanks,

This security update from Microsoft causes my computer (Windows Media Center/XP SP2) to malfunction and get the following message on boot-up. "The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C"\WINDOWS\system32\HHCTRL.OCX occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL." I searched for an e-mail on the Microsoft Update website so that I could inform someone of this however, no success unless you are willing to pay over 50 dollars. Geesh... Anyway, hope this helps...Bob.

It's something to do with audio (name escapes me now). When you reboot and
the message box comes up, -in the top bar is the actual file name (exe).
They don't mention the file name in the message body. Anyway Google the
'exe' name and you will find enough sites that suggest it is not necessary.

I removed that from the startup and don't seem to notice anything different.
I used ccleaner but msconfig will remove startup files methinks.

You are right it was just after installing the update.

Hello,
The command I suggested running was for this error code - 8007000B . It
should have been unique to that error message.
Open the CBS log file and locate the 0x8007003 ( this is the second time I
have seen it listed as 0x80070003 which should be too many characters but I
want to confirm)
Reply back with the 5 lines above and 10 lines below the line containing
the error code and of course the line containing the error code?
Do you have a users\default folder?
Where does your \users folder reside? Is it on the OS folder or elsewhere?
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

I have the 80070003 when trying to install ALL of the following updates:

|>KB925902
|>KB930178
|>KB931099
|>
|>The last two were released only yesterday, but I had no problems before
KB925902. I have tried the following:
|>
|>1) I have tried the standard MS response of deleting the temporary
files in SoftwareDistribution (BTW, for the person doing this in safe
mode, you merely need to disable the Windows Update service from
WINDOWS+R & "services.msc").
|>2) I have tried Darrell's sneaky CMD workaround.
|>3) I have installed manually. Whoever also did this with
(questionable) success, I have the same situation... although the
update is listed, it isn't REALLY installed!
|>
|>I can postulate, also, that the version of Vista doesn't matter. I am
on Ultimate & my wife's is on Home Premium. Although her's works fine,
I see others with Home Premium with this issue. I hope this gets fixed
soon, because it seems to be affecting all subsequent updates.

Hi Darrell, I have a similar problem with the 80070003 error code and I moved
my users folders around. Current under that registry entry I have a

Name-----Type-----Data

(Default)-----REG_SZ-----(value not set)
Default-----REG_EXPAND_SZ-----D:\Default
ProfilesDirectory-----REG_EXPAND_SZ-----D:\
ProgramData-----REG_EXPAND_SZ-----%SystemDrive%\ProgramData
Public-----REG_EXPAND_SZ-----D:\Public

I can email the exported txt entry if needbe. Any help would be appreciated
:)

Hello Dave,
Can you open the registry and export to a text file the following keys and
values under them:
Can you share what is in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList?
You can send it to me.

Was the c:\users folder moved, renamed, or is not at the default location?
There are some warning in the log file where we are noting that we have to
loaddefauluserhive
Thanks,

Hello Jamie,
What error message is in the Windows Update log? Can you just past a
couple of lines above and below the error message line and of course the
error message line?
Under d:\users do you have a default folder and in that folder do you have
a ntuser.dat file?
d:\users\default\ntuser.dat
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Hello Mark,
I need the System Event log as well as the cbs.log and the WindowsUpdate.log

From an elevated cmd prompt:

Try running fsutil resource setautoreset true c:\
Reboot the machine and retry to see if you get the same issue.

Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Hi Darrell,

I get this Windows Update error (80071a91) trying to update my Vista
computer. It doesn’t process any updates and gives me this number along
with other error numbers depending on what update I’m trying to process.
It downloads everything fine but just doesn’t install the actual
updates.

Also, the last time I "successfully" ran windows updates the system
crashed when it rebooted and I had to restore it back to an earlier
time before the updates. At least now all I get is this error which
prevents me from updating but at least it doesn't crash the system lol.

Any help will be appreciated and thanks in advance!

Mark

"fsutil resource setautoreset true c:\ " caused my machine to be un-able to
re-start windows upon re-boot. the machine started a diagnostic tool to "fix"
my start-up files. after this was accomplished, i tried to install kb925902,
plus the other 4 up-dates that give the same error code(80070002)for up-dates
930178, 928089, 931573, & 933566. guess what? they failed!
