This security update (for Vista) KB925902 failed upon reboot. I have
attempted to install this update three times.

Am I alone? Suggestions?

Thanks, Dave Horne (Vista Home Premium, 32 bit)

You are not alone. Do a search for kb925902 and you will find several posts
complaining of problems with this update, including mine. My post was the
earliest of the bunch, and so far, nobody, no one has given me a clue as to
what has happened. And the error message I got, 80070000B, when my machine
attempted to install the patch evidently refers to other operating systems
which I do not run, and programs which I am not using.

Hello Dave,
Do you have an error code for the failure?
What is in windowsupdate.log?
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Today, Rev OOC made these interesting comments ...
You are not alone. Do a search for kb925902 and you will find
several posts complaining of problems with this update,
including mine. My post was the earliest of the bunch, and so
far, nobody, no one has given me a clue as to what has

other operating systems which I do not run, and programs which
I am not using.
Like many updates, I take a "wait and see" attitude, in this case,
it appears to have saved me a lot of grief. I imagine that tomorrow
or the day after, MS will reissue the update, fixed this time. This
is exactly the reason why I no longer rush to be an early adopter
of any new fixes or versions of anything.

Thank you very much, Darrell. Your solution worked.

While I consider myself somewhat advanced as a computer user (I've fooled a
lot of people into thinking I'm an expert), I have absolutely no idea what I
did here (other than follow a script).

Thanks again,

Rev OOC

Darrell, when I click on the failed install in Update History I am told
80070003.

I've encountered this many times when trying other updates. I am in touch
with a support guy at MS for yet another update issue.

What I will do for this is rename the Windows \ SoftDistribution folder
which I can only do in SafeMode and try the update again.

If I succeed I'll report back. I've got other stuff to do .... but I will
report back.

Darrell, I renamed the folder Windows \ SoftwareDistribution and tried
again to reinstall this update but it failed again with the same error
message ... 80070003.

I'm waiting to hear back from MS Support re another failed Update and will
mention this to them.

Thanks! In the meantime I am open to any suggestions.

Hello Dave,
I need the WindowsUpdate.log located in \windows\windowsupdate.log
I also need to see the cbs log file located in \windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log
Can you zip them up and send them to me,
Darrellg@online,microsoft.com but remove the online piece to get to me.
Does the following folder exist?
\windows\servicing\packages If that is missing that could cause this error.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Hello Rev,
From fsutil help,
I cleaned some of the other options but this cleaned some transactional
metadata on the reboot:
C:\PCDiag>fsutil resource help

Inside the kernel link with more information, about the transactional
metadata but may be more than you want to know:

Hello Dave,
Can you open the registry and export to a text file the following keys and
values under them:
Can you share what is in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList?
You can send it to me.

Was the c:\users folder moved, renamed, or is not at the default location?
There are some warning in the log file where we are noting that we have to
loaddefauluserhive
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Hello,
That error message implies the package that was downloaded is not the
correct version or is already on the machine or possibly corrupted. If
there was a prerelease package that was installed, you may see this error.
See if the package is available for uninstall via control panal - programs
and features - installed updates. Attempt to remove it
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Darrell,
Your command line tip resolved the problem. Don't know what else it fixed
or broke, but it definitely fixed this issue. Thanks for being part of the
community.

I have spent over 4 hours on the phone with Microsoft regarding this issue. They have admitted that this patch "has problems" when applied to Vista. Currently there is no fix. Microsoft employees are having to reinstall the OS on their work computers as well. I have flattened 3 Vista PC's and (temporarily) re-installed XP.

Good Luck!!!

I have spent over 4 hours on the phone with Microsoft regarding this issue.
They have admitted that this patch "has problems" when applied to Vista.
Currently there is no fix. Microsoft employees are having to reinstall the
OS on their work computers as well. I have flattened 3 Vista PC's and
(temporarily) re-installed XP.

Good Luck!!!

Though it is clear that this patch is causing problems for some, it's not
true for all. The patch is installed on my laptop running Vista Business.
It installed fine, and everything runs fine.

Today, made these interesting comments ...

Sorry to hear of your travails, Ted. This is exactly why I do not
buy new versions of anything right away and also why I do not
necessarily install MS Critical Updates until I see that no one is
having trouble. Better to be at minor risk for not installing a
security patch than to turn my PC into just so much junk. Of
course, I have auto updates turned off on everything, they are all
set to "notify me but do not download or install". This gives me a
chance to pick and choose.

Good luck with MS and good luck with your recoveries!
