Update isn't working

Hi: for no obvious reason, Update has stopped working. It insists that I
must be logged on as an administrator. But in fact, I am logged in as the
administrator - checked passwords etc, and all is good. I see a number of
other posts that outline what seems to be the same issue. I'd be glad to
learn if anyone has nay insight in this as I can't download updates. Many
thanks. John
