Update Installation History

I was notified of a critical update and I downloaded KB
839643. It does not show in the Installation History at
all. This is the first time I have experienced this.
Activity (success) is shown in the C/Windows/update.log on
the date and time but I cannot ID the update from the
log. Windows Update says there is no new update
available. To be sure, I went to the Microsoft site and
downloaded KB 839643 again. It still does not show on the
Installation History. Is this the way things should be ?

Hi,

Start/run regedit, see if this key exists:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows
XP\SP2\KB839643\Filelist

If it does, the update is installed. You can verify the file versions as
well if you like, read:

Hi Rick:
Thanks for the prompt, informed, response.
I'm leery of fooling with the registry so looked at the
technet bulletin you referenced. That is the site from
which I downloaded that file the second time. In re-
reading I noted that it could be removed via the control
panel - "add remove programs" and so I looked to see if it
was in the list of installed software. Indeed Windows
Hotfix KB839643 is shown as installed. Isn't that
sufficient evidence that the update is, in fact, installed
on my computer ? Must I risk getting in over my head
(entering the registry) to be sure?

Hi Kelly:
Thanks for the suggestion. Will I be able to view the
updates without deleting the backup files or the
hotfixes. i.e. is there plenty of clear warning- and
clear option to stay out of trouble ? I'd like to know
that before I d/l and unzip. I'd hate to find out I had
unknowingly deleted something.

PS isnt' the presence of the hotfix in the "add remove
programs" list evidence of the presence of the update ?
Could it be absent and still show on that list ?

Yes, you just use the red X to close once you read the list.

Yes and not probable. I really wouldn't worry to much about the rest. Good
luck!
