Update.inf error

I am trying to update Windows XP home, I let Windows
update scan, then I chose to install SP1, It downloaded
and started the install but stopped and gave me an error,
something like this:

cannot continue, update.inf file integrity blah blah,
please see that chrypto.... something service is running
on this machine.

I check the services, its running and now I cannot update
Please help.

You may get this message is SP1 is already configured into your XP.

Rename the folder windows\system32\catroot2 and reboot. That will
generate a new, clean folder, and you can then delete the renamed one.

Then get - only - Q817287 and install it, which should now be OK. It
is the cure for the problem: you should then be able to carry on with
other updates, and the problem will not recur
