Update hardware database

I am trying to add a digital camera to my system.

I am running windows Me.

The hardware wizard will not respond it simply hangs with

"updating harware information database"

It has done this with both a flash card reader and
digicam, desperate to get this working for Xmas snaps of
grandkids.

Help please
