Didn't we ascertain that Fresh Download ceased working after a certain
date unless it was upgraded ? If so then IMO Arjan shouldn't have it
on his site. Either that OR explain to visitors that it has an expiry
date.

FD reduces the worth of a good site IMO.

The executable itself never expires.

What is involved is that FD writes to the registry whenever it is run,
the same was XXCopy does, recording total days usage. XXCopy, every xxx
period, it pops up a nag, reminding about who is qualified for freeware
license, and about checking for later version. What FD does, according
to that one user report, is once user has a total of whatever it is
(1-2 years or something) usage recorded in that registry key, it requires
re-registration.

Does he have AV programs on his website? A number of those require regular
re-registration. And for those cases generally, they really do stop working
in a meaningful way. Where it is not merely a matter of simple deletable
data in a registry key.

In either case, AVs, or other registerware such as FD: it is his site, and
to actually refuse to list programs which want periodic registration would
be his choice. And a choice which, IMO, would be rather odd.

When my copy of Fresh Download required re-registration I simply input
the registration code that I was given originally 1-2 years ago. That
worked perfectly and reset the usage back to zero. All saved .dfl files
remained intact as did all the settings that I had ever changed.

As an aside ..... whenever I upgrade any Fresh Devices program I direct
download the executable rather than navigate thru their site.

Thank you for the useful information.

My version was an interpretation based on my ~memory of someone's report.
I couldn't say anything first hand, since on my system, their days-usage
registry key gets periodically deleted.

Re-entering the original key into the program once a year, and not needing
to fill out a new form, that really doesn't sound inconvenient at all.

Yes, I took note of that shortcut, too. I'd felt kind of silly after
realizing that I was navigating five web links to get to the same download
file each time, particularly when the location for the update I was seeking
was stored right in that program's very own download list / .dfl file. :)
