Update for .NET Framework - "you can't get there from here"

Hi. I can't seem to get the Framwork 1.1 updated with the recent security
update(s). Here's what happens:

Windows Update determines that I need to install "Update for .NET Framwork
Service Pack 1 (KB886903)". After downloading, the installation fails, as
follows:
SL122.tmp - Coomon Language Runtime Debugging Services reports an error:
"Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process id=0xef8 (3832) Thread id='0xacc (2764)."

Following the link to "Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-004 ASP.NET Path
Validation
Vulnerability (887219)" provided with the updae notification, I realizing
that I don't have SP1 for .NET Framework 1.1 installed (even though Windows
Installer seems to think I do), I try to install it.

Executing NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe, SL96.tmp - Common Language Runtime
Degugging Services generates an error:
"Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process id=0xb24 (2852), Thread id=0x540 (1344)."

Trying another approach to installion published in this newsgroup - i.e.,
applying S867460.msp after extracting from NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe using
the command string "NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe /Xp:." - Windows Installer
displays a popup "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource
that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternative path to
a folder containing the installation package 'netfx.msi' in the box below."
(Netfx.msi is nowhere to be found on my machine.)

Still attempting to dutifully apply security updates to the Framwork, I try
to install
the "Update for .NET Framework 1.1 (886904).
Executing NDP1.1-KB886904-X86.exe, SLC5.tmp - Common Language Runtime
Degugging Services generates an error:
"Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process id=0xe10 (3600), Thread id=0x4e4 (1252)."

I'm at the classic Microsoft "you can't there from here" point. Help.
