Update error

I just loaded Windows Defender. It said that it hasn't been updated in 19
days. When I click on the check for updates it returns an error 0x8024400a
that it was unable to complete the update. How can I correct this ?

I have the same issue except the error code I get back is 0x8024002b.

I've checked the event log and there's nothing relevant there.

Microsoft, can you change your error reporting to be more descriptive
(without error codes) and perhaps write an event in the event log with the
specific error code. Error codes such as 0x8024002b mean nothing to me...

Although I have not resolved my problem, I have found a work around...

I used Microsoft Update (http://update.microsoft.com/) and it presented the
Windows Defender update when I selected the "Custom" update.

My version details are now:

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1185.0
Signature Version: 1.13.1272.4

Hope it works for you?

I waited to see if it was updating and it was but it gives no indication it is updating. So after a few minutes (broadband) it
completes and changes the checkmark on the castle icon in the system tray from red to green. Then the tray icon totally disappears.
So the error might occur if it is already checking or updating and the button is pushed.

Open the command prompt

Go to C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\ folder

Execute the following command: msiexec /x AS_Sigs.msi

Then Check for updates

I had almost the same error 0x80240025. The problem was that on our network
we turn off automatic updates with our group policy and that is how Windows
Defender gets it's updates.

I have the same issue except the error code I get back is 0x8024002b.

I've checked the event log and there's nothing relevant there.

Microsoft, can you change your error reporting to be more descriptive
(without error codes) and perhaps write an event in the event log with
the
specific error code. Error codes such as 0x8024002b mean nothing to
me...

Guest

If you are using WSUS then Windows Defender connects to it to find updates.
If your administrator (which is me in my case) doesn't have WSUS configured
for Windows Defender then you won't receive updates.

I've checked the event log and there's nothing relevant there.

Microsoft, can you change your error reporting to be more descriptive
(without error codes) and perhaps write an event in the event log with the
specific error code. Error codes such as 0x8024002b mean nothing to me...

I tried that and it made no difference. It appears the "Windows Updates"
MUST be enabled to work and we block the updater through a group policy.

Windows Defender updates via either Windows Update or AutoUpdate.

If AutoUpdate is routed to a WSUS server on your network, your WSUS
administrator can enable Windows Defender definitions to be distributed.

I just loaded Windows Defender. It said that it hasn't been updated
in

days. When I click on the check for updates it returns an error
0x8024400a
that it was unable to complete the update. How can I correct this ?
