Update date automatically in doc based on template

I created a template and I included a field from Insert - date & time and
selected update automatically.

Each time I open the template to create a new doc, I would like the current
date inserted BUT when I open this document in the future, I would like the
date to remain unchanged. Is there a way to do this? I read somewhere that
Ctrl+F11 will prevent it from being updated but I am afraid I will not
remember to do that each time.
Thanks!

Vicky,

Replace the {DATE} field in your template with a {CREATEDATE} field.

Open the template and toggle field codes with Ctrl+a then Alt+F9. Make the
change as shown above and Alt+F9 again to diplay the field result.

It will display the date the template was created in the template, but new
documents created from the template will show the dates they were created.
You can change your existing documents by changing the fields in them and
updating the fields to show their creation dates.
